The short answer
With NIF Express, your NIF is usually issued in 3–7 business days after we receive your signed documents. The Portuguese Tax Authority (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira) access password follows separately, by registered post to your fiscal representative, about 7 days later — and we forward it to you as soon as it arrives. So in most cases you have a fully usable tax number well inside a fortnight, with the password completing the set shortly after.
It helps to think of the NIF as arriving in two parts. First comes the nine-digit number itself, which is what you quote to open a bank account, sign a lease or progress an immigration file. Second comes the password that unlocks your personal area on the Tax Authority portal, which you will want for ongoing administration but rarely need on day one.
The timeline, step by step
- You apply & upload documents — about 5 minutes online, with no need to travel to Portugal.
- We review your documents — usually within 1 business day — and flag anything that needs correcting before submission.
- You sign & return the prepared documents, including the power of attorney — whenever you can.
- We submit to the Tax Authority — typically 1 business day after we have your signed paperwork.
- NIF issued — usually 3–7 business days from submission.
- Access password — about 7 days after the NIF, sent by registered post to your fiscal representative.
The single variable most within your control is how quickly you sign and return the prepared documents. Everything before submission moves at your pace; everything after it is largely in the Tax Authority’s hands.
What can speed it up or slow it down
The fastest applications are the ones with clean, in-date documents — a clear, legible passport copy and a recent proof of address. Missing, expired or low-quality documents are the most common cause of delay, because they force a round of corrections before anything can be filed. A blurred scan, a cropped page or a proof of address that is too old can each add days. Our document checklist sets out exactly what to prepare so you get everything right the first time.
It is worth being clear about where the clock sits. We can move quickly on review and submission, but the final issuing time is set by the Portuguese Tax Authority, not by any provider. That is why no honest service can promise same-day or guaranteed issuance — the 3–7 business day window reflects how the Tax Authority processes applications in practice. If you are weighing your options, our comparison of applying online versus at a consulate explains why the timelines differ.
Does going remote slow it down?
No. A remotely filed NIF is issued on the same timeline as one obtained in person — the only difference is that a fiscal representative files it on your behalf. Because residents outside the EU or EEA must appoint a fiscal representative in Portugal anyway, the remote route is often the most practical option rather than a slower one. You can read how the remote process works in full, including how the power of attorney is signed by a lawyer registered with the Portuguese Bar Association.
Why the password arrives separately
The access password is not a delay so much as a second delivery. The Tax Authority generates it after the NIF exists and sends it by registered post for security, which is why it lands roughly a week after the number itself. For most people the timing is a non-issue: the NIF is what unlocks practical steps such as opening a bank account, while the password matters later for managing your tax profile online. With non-resident applications, the post goes to your fiscal representative — in our case, our Lisbon office on Avenida da Liberdade — and we forward it on to you as soon as it arrives.
Planning around your deadline
If your NIF is tied to a time-sensitive goal — a property completion, a bank appointment, or a visa or residence-permit submission — the safest approach is to start early and return your signed documents promptly. Build in a little buffer beyond the 3–7 business day estimate, since the issuing time ultimately depends on the Tax Authority. The number itself is permanent, issued once and valid for life, so there is no renewal clock to watch once it is in hand. At €49.99, NIF Express also includes the mandatory first year of fiscal representation, with no hidden fees, so the price you see covers both the application and the representative who receives that registered letter.
