Yes, getting a NIF is fully remote
You do not need to fly to Lisbon or queue at a Portuguese consulate to obtain a NIF. By signing a power of attorney (procuração), you authorise a licensed representative in Portugal to register your NIF with the Tax Authority (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira) on your behalf. The NIF itself is a permanent nine-digit tax identification number — it is issued once, stays with you for life, and never expires — so it is well worth getting right the first time. Everything in the remote process happens online, from your own home, at a time that suits you. If you are still weighing the options, our guide on getting a NIF online versus at a consulate sets out the practical differences.
Why people used to travel — and why they no longer need to
Historically, applicants either visited a Portuguese tax office in person or booked an appointment at a consulate abroad. Those appointments were often months out, the forms were available only in Portuguese, and there was rarely any guidance on how to complete them. A single formatting error or a missing document could mean starting the whole process again. For anyone outside Portugal, the practical cost — flights, time off work, and the uncertainty — was considerable. The remote route removes all of that friction while producing exactly the same result: a valid NIF on the Tax Authority’s records.
The role of the power of attorney
The power of attorney is the legal instrument that makes remote registration possible. It is a formal authorisation, limited in scope, that allows your representative to act for you before the Tax Authority — nothing more. It does not give anyone access to your money or the right to make decisions on your behalf beyond the tax registration it describes. For residents outside the EU or EEA there is an additional requirement built into Portuguese law: you must appoint a fiscal representative in Portugal, a local point of contact for the Tax Authority. With NIF Express, that first mandatory year of fiscal representation is included in the price, so you are compliant from day one.
The remote process, step by step
- Tell us about yourself — a short form with your passport and contact details (about five minutes).
- Upload your documents — a copy of your passport and a proof of address. Our document checklist sets out exactly what is accepted.
- Sign and return — we pre-fill your legal documents, including the power of attorney; you simply sign and upload them from your portal.
- Receive your NIF — we submit your file to the Tax Authority and deliver your nine-digit number to your portal as soon as it is issued.
There is no print-sign-scan marathon and no notarised translation to chase down. The documents are prepared for you, and the only active step on your side is signing.
How long it takes and what arrives
Your NIF is typically issued in 3–7 business days once we have your signed documents. Two things arrive, and it helps to know they come separately. First, the NIF number itself, which we deliver to your portal. Second, the Tax Authority access password — the credential that lets you log in to the AT’s online services — which follows by registered post to your fiscal representative about seven days later. We forward it to you as soon as it arrives. For a fuller breakdown of timing, see how long a NIF takes.
What your remote NIF unlocks
A remotely obtained NIF is identical in every respect to one issued over a counter, and it is the key that opens the practical side of life in Portugal. You will need it to open a Portuguese bank account, to buy or sell property, and to sign rental, utility, mobile and insurance contracts. It is also a prerequisite for visa and residence-permit applications submitted under the requirements set by Portuguese immigration law, as well as for buying a car, starting a company, or working as a freelancer. In short, the NIF is the first administrative step for almost anything you will do in the country.
Who can represent you
NIF Express is the online service of Blue Ocean Immigration, a licensed Portuguese immigration consultancy with a physical office on Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon. Your power of attorney is signed by a lawyer registered with the Portuguese Bar (Ordem dos Advogados), so your representation is real, formal, and accountable. The price is €49.99, which already includes the mandatory first year of fiscal representation, with no hidden costs — a meaningful detail, because that representation is exactly what a non-resident applicant is legally required to have in place.
