Parents and guardians often need a Portuguese tax number (NIF) for a child before a property deed, a bank account, a residency file or another contract can go ahead. This guide explains which documents are required, how parental consent is handled, what the minor package costs and how the remote process works.
In short
- A child’s NIF can be obtained remotely, without travelling to Portugal.
- Price: €74.99 for a minor (€49.99 for an adult), including 12 months of fiscal representation.
- Documents: the child’s passport or ID, the ID documents of both parents and the child’s birth certificate.
- Consent: we prepare the parental consent declarations for you.
- Timing: typically 5–14 business days once the signed documents are received.
When does a child need a NIF?
- The child is named on a property purchase or gift in Portugal
- Opening a bank account or savings product in the child’s name
- Registering the child as a dependent in a residency or immigration process
- Inheritance, insurance or other contracts where a tax number is requested for the child
A NIF is a tax identification number. Having one does not by itself decide where a person is tax-resident.
Documents required for a minor
An application for a child under 18 needs a few more documents than an adult one, because the identity of both parents and the parental relationship have to be confirmed. This is the same list as in our guide to the documents required for a Portuguese NIF.
- The child’s passport or identity document
- Identity documents of both parents
- The child’s birth certificate
You do not need to draft any consent forms yourself. We prepare the parental consent declarations as part of a minor application, so the legal wording is handled correctly from the start. A power of attorney is also signed by the authorised adult(s), so that a Portuguese lawyer can file and follow the application on the child’s behalf.
If only one parent has parental responsibility
Tell us when you start if only one parent holds parental responsibility, or if the child has a legal guardian. We will tell you which evidence is needed for that case before anything is filed.
Adult and minor packages
| Adult | Minor | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | €49.99 | €74.99 |
| Applicant | 18 or over | Under 18 |
| Documents | Passport and proof of address abroad | Child’s ID, both parents’ ID and birth certificate |
| Fiscal representation | 12 months included | 12 months included |
After the first year, fiscal representation renews every twelve months at the same amount as the period that has just ended. You receive an email at least 30 days before each renewal charge, so you can stop it if you no longer want it. The details are in our terms.
What about kids and families?
Every child needs their own NIF, so a family pays per person. At the published prices, a minor costs €74.99 and an adult €49.99, each including 12 months of fiscal representation, so two adults and two minors come to €249.96 in total. Each child follows the same documents and consent steps described above.
The sum is 2 × €49.99 + 2 × €74.99. For the full breakdown, see how much a NIF costs for a family.
How long does it take?
The NIF is typically issued in 5–14 business days once the signed documents are received. The access password for the Tax Authority’s online portal follows separately; the full timeline is in How Long Does It Take to Get a NIF?
How the remote process works
- Start on the service page and choose the minor option (€74.99).
- Upload the documents and sign the consent declarations and the power of attorney. We guide the parents through each signature.
- Receive the NIF in your client portal when the Tax Authority issues it, with 12 months of fiscal representation included.
Tips for parents abroad
- Send colour scans with all four corners visible and no glare.
- Check that names are written the same way on the passport and on the birth certificate, including middle names.
- If the parents live in different countries, allow a little extra time for signatures.
NIF Express is a private consultancy, not a government service: we help you prepare and file, and the Portuguese Tax Authority issues the NIF. See the NIF online service — adult €49.99, minor €74.99.
