You need:
You do not need to draft any consent forms yourself. We prepare the parental consent declarations for you as part of a minor NIF application.
Check that it is dated within the last 3 months and shows your full name and home address.
You will need one before you apply. We look for a utility bill, bank statement or official letter from the last 3 months showing your name and home address. It does not need to be in English: documents in other languages are usually accepted, and we tell you during the review if a translation is ever required.
Fiscal representation: when it applies
You can request a NIF without a fiscal representative. The obligation to have one arises when you establish a tax relationship in Portugal, for example by buying a property or a vehicle, signing an employment contract or working on your own account: the Tax Authority can then require it within 15 days. The first year is included in the price. It then renews each year at the same price as the previous period, and we email you at least 30 days before.
Fiscal representation: you can choose
Residents of EU and EEA countries (including Andorra and Switzerland) can choose between appointing a fiscal representative and joining electronic notifications. Third-country nationals who work on their own account must appoint a representative even if they join. We confirm what applies to you as part of the application.
Timing
Once your documents are received and reviewed, the NIF is typically issued within 5–14 business days. The final timing depends on the Portuguese Tax Authority.

Tips to avoid rejected files
- Upload PDF, JPG or PNG files: clear, in focus and uncropped.
- Send the full document, not just a corner, a partial photo or a screenshot of one section.
- Check that the text is sharp and readable. Glare, shadows or a blurry photo are common reasons a file gets queried.

Which documents do I need for a Portuguese NIF?
An adult needs a copy of a valid passport and a proof of address issued within the last 3 months. For a minor: the minor’s passport or identity document, the identity documents of both parents, the minor’s birth certificate and a proof of address. We prepare the parental consent declarations for you.
Does my proof of address need to be in English?
No. Documents in other languages are usually fine. If a translation is needed, we will let you know during the review.
How recent does my proof of address have to be?
It should be dated within the last 3 months and clearly show your full name and home address. A utility bill, bank statement or official letter all work well.
Do I need extra documents if I live outside the EU/EEA?
No additional documents are required from you. A non-resident can request a NIF without a fiscal representative, but the Tax Authority can require one once you have a tax relationship in Portugal, and the first year of that representation is included in the price.
