If you cannot find your NIF (número de identificação fiscal), the reassuring news is that it has not gone anywhere. The NIF is permanent: it never expires and never changes, so the number you were issued is still yours. It is always nine digits — no letters, no dashes. Here is where to find it, and how to get an official copy if you have misplaced every record.
Where your NIF is written down
Your NIF appears in several places you may already have:
- On the registration sheet the Tax Authority issued when your NIF was created
- On any letter or assessment from Finanças (the Tax Authority)
- Inside your account on the Portal das Finanças, once you log in
- On the comprovativo de NIF — the official certificate you can download free from the portal
- Printed on the Cartão de Cidadão, for Portuguese citizens
Downloading the official comprovativo
The comprovativo de NIF is the document most institutions accept as proof of your tax number. Once you are logged in to the Portal das Finanças you can download it free of charge, and it is the cleanest way to confirm the exact number and the name it is registered under. If a bank, landlord or employer asks you to “prove your NIF”, this is the document they mean.
If you cannot log in or find any record
Two things are worth separating: the NIF itself (the nine-digit number) and the Portal das Finanças password (the senha that lets you log in). If you have the number but not the password, you can request a new access password on the portal — it is sent by post to the address the Tax Authority has on file, which for a non-resident is the address of your fiscal representative. If you have lost the number entirely, you can retrieve it at any tax office, or by calling the Tax Authority support line, or — often the fastest route — by asking whoever originally obtained the NIF for you.
Non-residents: your representative can help
If you obtained your NIF remotely as a non-resident, your fiscal representative holds the registered Portuguese address and receives the Tax Authority’s correspondence, including the access password. That makes them the natural first point of contact if you have lost track of your number or cannot access the portal from abroad.
