What the D8 visa is
The Digital Nomad Visa (D8) is Portugal’s residence route for remote workers and freelancers who earn their living from clients or employers based outside the country. It lets you live in Portugal while continuing to work remotely, provided you meet the eligibility criteria and income conditions set by Portuguese immigration law. Those requirements are assessed by the authorities at the time you apply, but one practical step sits underneath the entire process from the very beginning: obtaining a NIF, your Portuguese tax identification number. Without it, almost none of the preparatory steps a D8 applicant must complete are possible.
Why the D8 needs a NIF
The Número de Identificação Fiscal is a nine-digit number issued by the Portuguese tax authority (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira). It is the key that unlocks nearly every formal transaction in Portugal — and a D8 application leans on several of them. To demonstrate your means and income, you will in practice need a Portuguese bank account, and a bank cannot open one for you without a NIF. The same applies if you sign a lease or service contract to establish a Portuguese address. Because these documents typically have to be ready before your consular appointment, the NIF is not a late-stage formality — it is the foundation you lay first. For more on this sequence, see our guide on the NIF and a Portuguese bank account, and on the paperwork itself in our overview of the documents required for a NIF.
When to get it — the right order
Sequencing matters, because each step depends on the one before it. A reliable order looks like this:
- Get your NIF — remotely, in a few days, before anything else.
- Open a Portuguese bank account and arrange to show your income and means.
- Prepare your remote-work evidence — contracts, proof of activity and the supporting documents required for the route.
- Book and attend your D8 appointment with the complete file in hand.
Treating the NIF as step one keeps the rest of the timeline from stalling. If you start with the appointment and only then chase a bank account, you risk being caught without the tax number the bank insists on. If you are wondering how much lead time to leave, our guide on how long a NIF takes sets out what to expect.
A permanent number you keep for life
One reassuring detail: the NIF you obtain for your D8 application is not a temporary document tied to the visa. It is permanent and never expires — the same nine digits stay with you for life, whether you are a non-resident today, a D8 holder next year, or a long-term resident afterwards. You apply once and carry it through every later stage, from registering a freelance activity to buying a car, taking out insurance or eventually purchasing property. It is genuinely a one-time step that pays off across your whole relationship with Portugal.
Each applicant, and non-EU residents
Every person on the application needs their own NIF — a partner or child joining you cannot share yours. Plan for one number per applicant from the outset. There is also an important rule for where you currently live: if you are resident outside the EU/EEA, Portuguese law requires you to appoint a fiscal representative in Portugal — a local point of contact for the tax authority. With NIF Express this representation is included in your first year, so you are compliant from day one without arranging it separately. Our guide on the NIF for non-residents explains how this works in detail.
How NIF Express handles it remotely
You do not need to travel to Portugal to begin. We register your NIF on your behalf using a power of attorney signed by a lawyer enrolled with the Portuguese Bar Association (Ordem dos Advogados). NIF Express is the online service of Blue Ocean Immigration, a licensed immigration consultancy with an office on Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon. The number is typically issued in 3–7 working days, and the official access password from the tax authority arrives separately, around seven days later, by registered post to your fiscal representative. The price is €49.99, which already includes that mandatory first year of fiscal representation — no hidden charges.
Getting started
If the D8 is your goal, the most useful thing you can do today is secure the NIF that the rest of your file depends on. Start your application, read about how the remote process works, or compare the two main income-based routes in our guide to the NIF for the D7 visa.
