NIF for the Portugal Golden Visa

Your NIF is step one of a Golden Visa — you need it before you can invest. Here’s why, and how to get it remotely.

The NIF is step one of the Golden Visa

The Portugal Golden Visa (Autorização de Residência para Investimento, or ARI) is a residency-by-investment programme, and almost every administrative action it involves runs through one number: your NIF. The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is a nine-digit tax identification number issued by the Portuguese Tax and Customs Authority. It is permanent — it stays with you for life and never expires — which means the NIF you obtain at the start of your Golden Visa journey is the same one you will use years later when you renew your residency or apply for citizenship.

Before you can move money into Portugal, open a bank account, or sign for whatever qualifying investment you choose, you need this number on file. In plain terms: no NIF, no investment, no Golden Visa. The encouraging part is that it is also the easiest step to complete, and you can get it entirely remotely — long before you commit a single euro.

Where the NIF fits in the Golden Visa timeline

It helps to see the NIF in context. The qualifying investment and the residency application are governed by requirements set under Portuguese immigration law, which fall outside the scope of this guide — but the practical sequence almost always begins the same way:

  1. Obtain your NIF (and a NIF for each family member you intend to include).
  2. Open a Portuguese bank account — see our guide on the NIF and a Portuguese bank account.
  3. Transfer your investment funds and complete the qualifying investment.
  4. Submit the Golden Visa application to the immigration authority (AIMA).

Because every one of these steps depends on the NIF being in place, securing it early is what keeps the rest of your timeline moving. A delay at step one cascades into delays at every step after it.

Every applicant needs their own NIF

The Golden Visa is frequently a family decision, and the NIF requirement applies to each person individually. The main applicant and every family member included in the application — typically a spouse, dependent children, and dependent parents — each need their own NIF. There is no shared or household number; the tax authority issues one per person.

This includes minors. Dependent children need a NIF just as adults do, and registering them follows the same remote process, with a few additional documents. We set out exactly what is needed in our guide to the documents required for a NIF. Registering the whole family together at the outset avoids a common bottleneck later, when a single missing number can hold up an otherwise complete application.

Non-EU investors and fiscal representation

Most Golden Visa investors live outside the European Union, and Portuguese law requires anyone resident outside the EU/EEA to appoint a fiscal representative in Portugal for as long as they remain non-resident. The fiscal representative is your point of contact with the tax authority — the person who receives official correspondence on your behalf and ensures you can be reached for any tax matter while you are abroad.

This is not an optional extra you can defer; it is a legal condition of holding a NIF as a non-resident. NIF Express includes the mandatory first year of fiscal representation in the price, so this requirement is handled from the moment your number is issued, with no separate arrangement to chase.

How NIF Express handles it remotely

NIF Express is the online service of Blue Ocean Immigration, a licensed immigration consultancy with an office on Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon. Because you are unlikely to be in Portugal when you start the Golden Visa process, the entire registration is done by power of attorney: you sign a procuration prepared and witnessed by a lawyer enrolled with the Portuguese Bar Association (Ordem dos Advogados), and we register each applicant’s NIF on your behalf — no consulate appointment and no travel required.

The service costs €49.99, with the obligatory first year of fiscal representation already included and no hidden fees. Your NIF is typically issued within 3–7 working days. A separate access password for the tax authority’s online portal follows roughly seven days later, sent by registered post to your fiscal representative — useful later for managing your tax affairs as a Portuguese resident.

Get your NIF before you commit funds

The logic of the Golden Visa rewards preparation. Because the NIF underpins the bank account, the fund transfer, and the investment itself, having it ready before you act removes the single most common point of friction from your timeline. It is a small, fixed, one-off step that unlocks everything that follows.

If you are weighing up the routes and want to understand the number itself in more depth, our overview of what a NIF is is a good place to start. When you are ready, start your application and we will have your number — and your family’s — in motion within days.
