How to Choose a NIF Service in Portugal: 7 Checks Before You Pay

The Portuguese NIF is issued by the Tax Authority, not by a private company. If you apply from abroad, you will probably use a service that prepares and files the application for you. That means handing over your passport and signing a power of attorney, so it is worth checking who you are dealing with. This guide gives seven checks you can do in a few minutes, and none of them depends on taking a website’s word for it.

1. Is it a real, registered company?

A Portuguese company has a tax number (NIPC) and is listed in the commercial registry. Look it up before paying. NIF Express is run by BOCEAN IMMIGRATION PORTUGAL, LDA (NIPC 519043731), trading as Blue Ocean Immigration. See who is behind NIF Express.

2. Is a named lawyer behind it?

Lawyers in Portugal are members of the Ordem dos Advogados and have a professional licence number you can search in the Bar Association directory. Every guide on this site is reviewed by Ícaro Couto, a member of the Ordem dos Advogados, licence 67883F, and the power of attorney is signed with a lawyer enrolled with the Bar.

3. Is there a physical office you can check?

An address on a map and a phone line that someone answers are easy to test. NIF Express has an office on Avenida da Liberdade, n.º 67B, 3.º B, 1250-140 Lisbon, and a Lisbon phone line, plus a US and Canada toll-free line. Support runs Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 17:00, Lisbon time.

4. Does the website pretend to be the government?

The Tax Authority’s own service, free of charge when applied for in person, is on the Portuguese government’s official portals. A private service should say clearly that it is private. 5. Does the price include fiscal representation?

If you live outside the EU and EEA, you can request a Portuguese NIF without a fiscal representative, but the Tax Authority can require one once you establish a tax relationship in Portugal. 6. What happens after the first year?

Ask how representation renews, at what price and with what notice. With NIF Express it renews every twelve months at the same amount as the period that has just ended, with an email at least 30 days before each charge, and you can stop it before it is charged. The details are in our terms.

7. Can you reach people, and what is the timeline?

What about the free route?
