If you hold a British passport and need a Portuguese tax number (NIF), the steps are the same as for other non-residents, plus one point that changed with Brexit: the United Kingdom is now outside the EU and the EEA, which matters for fiscal representation. This guide explains why British citizens need a NIF, which documents are required, how the representative rule works and how to apply without leaving the UK.
In short
- You can get a Portuguese NIF remotely from the UK, with no trip to Portugal.
- The UK is outside the EU and the EEA, but a UK resident can request a NIF without appointing a fiscal representative; the Tax Authority can require one once you establish a tax relationship in Portugal.
- NIF Express: €49.99 for an adult (€74.99 for a minor), with the first year of fiscal representation included.
- Typically 5–14 business days once the signed documents are received.
Why British citizens need a NIF
Banks, notaries, landlords and utility companies in Portugal ask for a NIF before they open an account, complete a sale or sign a contract. Typical reasons for UK applicants:
- Buying or selling property — see Do You Need a NIF to Buy Property in Portugal?
- Opening a Portuguese bank account — see NIF & Opening a Portuguese Bank Account
- Renting long term or signing utility contracts
- Visa and residency routes that ask for a NIF early, such as the D7 visa, the D8 digital nomad visa or the Golden Visa
You do not need to live in Portugal to have a NIF, and many UK applicants complete the whole process from home.
Brexit and the fiscal representative rule
A resident of a country outside the EU and EEA can request a Portuguese NIF without appointing a fiscal representative. The obligation to have one arises when a tax relationship with Portugal is established (for example, owning a property or a vehicle, signing an employment contract or working on your own account), and the Tax Authority can then require the appointment within 15 days. Since Brexit, the United Kingdom is one of those countries, and EU/EEA residents have the option of electronic notifications instead. The rule follows where you live, not which passport you hold, as explained in our guide to NIF for non-residents and fiscal representation.
A fiscal representative is a person or firm based in Portugal, registered with the Tax Authority, who receives official tax correspondence on your behalf. With NIF Express the first year of fiscal representation is already included in the price, so you are covered when the obligation applies.
Documents for UK applicants
For an adult applicant, two documents are usually enough, as set out in our guide to the documents required for a Portuguese NIF:
- A copy of your valid British passport — the photo page, clear and fully legible.
- A proof of address in the UK — a utility bill, bank statement or official letter issued within the last 3 months, showing your name and home address.
The remote route works through a power of attorney, signed with a Portuguese lawyer, that lets us register your NIF with the Tax Authority for you. Applying for a child? See NIF for Minors in Portugal.
How long does it take?
The NIF number is typically issued in 5–14 business days once your signed documents are received. The access password for the Tax Authority’s online portal follows separately, about a week later, by registered post to your fiscal representative; we forward it as soon as it arrives. The full timeline is in How Long Does It Take to Get a NIF?
What it costs
NIF Express charges €49.99 for an adult and €74.99 for a minor, with the first year of fiscal representation included. The Tax Authority itself charges nothing for issuing a NIF; the price covers preparation, the power of attorney, filing support and fiscal representation. After the first year, representation renews every twelve months at the same amount as the period that has just ended, with an email at least 30 days before each charge. See How Much Does a Portuguese NIF Cost? and our terms.
Online or at a consulate?
The NIF can also be requested through other routes, such as in person. Appointments, requirements and travel vary, which is why many UK applicants prefer a remote application. Our guide NIF Online vs at a Consulate compares the two on time, effort and cost.
How the remote process works
- Start on the service page and complete the details.
- Upload your documents and sign the power of attorney with our guidance.
- Receive your NIF in the client portal when the Tax Authority issues it, with the first year of fiscal representation included.
NIF Express is a private consultancy, not a government service: we help you prepare and file, and the Portuguese Tax Authority issues the NIF. See the NIF online service — adult €49.99, minor €74.99.
