Once your NIF is issued, a second step often causes confusion: signing in to the Portuguese tax portal. This guide explains how the Portal das Finanças login works for people who live abroad, based on the Tax Authority’s own instructions and on how the password reaches NIF Express clients. It is general information, not legal advice.
Is there a separate “NIF login” in Portugal?
No. Your NIF is your username on the Portal das Finanças, the website of the Portuguese Tax Authority (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira, AT). You also need a password, which is a separate credential. The AT adds that registration and sign-in can also be done with the Chave Móvel Digital or the Cartão de Cidadão. The Portal das Finanças is a government website; the NIF Express client portal, where you sign your documents and receive your NIF, is a separate service. How do you get a Portal das Finanças password from abroad?
By post. The AT generates the password after the request (Registar-se on the portal, with your NIF, your tax address and a security question) and sends it by CTT to your tax address. It cannot be sent by email or to an address other than the one in the AT records. If you have indicated a fiscal representative, the letter goes to your representative’s address in Portugal. The AT quotes an average of 5 business days for delivery. Source: AT leaflet, Acesso ao Portal das Finanças – Autenticação e Senhas (in Portuguese).
With NIF Express, the password arrives separately from the NIF: about 7 business days after the NIF is issued, by registered post to your fiscal representative. In the first year that is our Lisbon office on Avenida da Liberdade, and we forward the password to you as soon as it arrives. See How Long Does a Portuguese NIF Take? for the full timeline.
What happens the first time you sign in?
You enter your NIF and the password from the letter, and the portal makes you set a new password straight away: the AT explains that the password sent by post expires after first use and cannot be used again. The new password must have at least 8 characters, with at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, one digit and one special character (for example /, *, # or %). The characters are not visible as you type, so check that Caps Lock is off.
What if the password does not arrive?
The AT says that if the letter has not arrived within 5 business days of the request, it was probably lost or returned. It suggests going to the tax office (Serviço de Finanças) of your tax address or calling its call centre on (+351) 217 206 707, on working days from 9:00 to 19:00. If your representative is NIF Express, write to [email protected] (Monday to Friday, 10:00–17:00 Lisbon time) and we will check where the letter is.
How do you recover a forgotten password?
The portal has a Recuperar Senha service. According to the AT leaflet, if you chose a security question and have a confirmed mobile number, you can receive a code by SMS (valid for 5 minutes) or a new letter; without a confirmed number, a new letter is sent. If you no longer remember the security question, the AT asks you to email [email protected] from the email address registered with the AT and then request a new password. Letters are posted to the tax address on file, which for a non-resident with a representative is the representative’s address, so a recovery by post takes about as long as the first password.
Do you need the password straight away?
Usually not. The nine-digit NIF is what you give a bank, a landlord or a notary; the password matters later, for managing your tax profile online: downloading the comprovativo de NIF, checking your registration, or changing your fiscal representative online. Losing the password does not mean losing the NIF, which never changes; see how to find or recover your NIF.
Frequently asked questions
What is my username for the Portal das Finanças?
Your NIF. You sign in with the NIF and a password; the AT also allows sign-in with the Chave Móvel Digital or the Cartão de Cidadão.
How long does the Portal das Finanças password take to arrive?
The Tax Authority quotes an average of 5 business days from the request. With NIF Express it typically arrives about 7 business days after the NIF is issued, by registered post to your fiscal representative, and we forward it to you.
Can the password be sent by email?
No. The Tax Authority sends it by post only, to the tax address in its records. For a non-resident with a fiscal representative, that is the representative’s address.
Why does the password from the letter not work a second time?
Because it expires after first use. The portal asks you to set a new password the first time you sign in with the letter password.
What are the rules for the new password?
At least 8 characters, with at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, one digit and one special character, such as /, *, # or %.
If I lose the password, do I lose my NIF?
No. The NIF is permanent and never changes. The password is a separate credential that you can recover on the portal.
Is the NIF Express login the same as the Portal das Finanças login?
No. The NIF Express client portal is where you sign documents and receive your NIF. The Portal das Finanças is the Tax Authority’s website, with its own credentials.
